Medallion Signature Guarantee

In the United States of America, the medallion signature guarantee is applied to the transference of securities as a kind of signature. But what are these securities, and why is the medallion signature guarantee applied to them?

A security is a term in the financial world given to a tradable asset. In the United States, where the medallion signature guarantee is applicable, securities is a term can cover many things. These are banknotes, bonds, debentures, common stocks, and forwards, futures, options and swaps, the latter four of which come under the category of derivatives. The name of the company that issues these securities is called the issuer.

/ What is a Medallion Signature Guarantee

The medallion signature is a guarantee by the transferring financial power that the signature attached to the security is genuine and the financial institution, therefore, accepts liability for any forgery of the signature committed.  Medallion signature guarantees serve the function of protecting shareholders by preventing unauthorised transferences of the securities and help to minimise losses of those who have invested. It’s often the case that different places will have different policies as to what type of documentation they require in order to provide the medallion signature guarantee, and whether they will charge any kind of fee for such a service.

Most companies and organisations will often refuse to guarantee a signature of someone if they haven’t already been a customer in the past, so it’s worth noting that you may need to be a loyal customer to get a guarantee with little hassle.

It is interesting to note that a medallion signature guarantee isn’t the same thing as an official acknowledgement by a notary public. Looking at it from the perspective that a signature guarantee is basically just a validation by the issuing business or company that the signature is, in fact, authentic, and an official acknowledgment is the certification by a notary public body that attests to the fact that the signer signed the document of their free will, and signed the document in the presence of the notary and provided acceptable proof of identity at the time of signing.

/ Banks with a Medallion Guarantee

A helpful note to remember is that when someone from the States is abroad and unable to obtain a medallion signature guarantee stamp, some financial institutions may accept a United States embassy seal in its place, depending on circumstances. Business or companies outside the United States which have an existing relationship with a USA bankmight well be able to offer a medallion signature guarantee to existing customers, regardless of location. It is for this reason that it is recommended you check with your existing bank or issuers before you leave the country, to ensure you know all the facts.

It’s also worth noting that banks are not the sole providers of these guarantees anymore, but they can also be distributed by other financial powers such as a loan company, or certain credit unions, but they are always distributed at the discretion of the individual company or business. Due to the irregular nature of these establishments, however, the requirements for obtaining a guarantee will be different from place to place.

/ Signature Guarantee

Overall, signature medallion guarantees are important for ensuring that any kind of security is recognised as a genuine and legitimate item, with an importance placed upon the ability to quickly and efficiently issue a guarantee. While being harder to obtain outside the USA, there are methods to obtain one if certain criteria are met. There are many places where a guarantee can be obtained, and most places will be able to talk through and explain the process of one, so anybody applying for one shouldn’t be discouraged by a lack of understanding.
